Staying at Ulusaba

Staying at Ulusaba, 5* Accommodation, Service and Safari

Ulusaba is Sir Richard Bransons Private Game Reserve, it's in Sabi Sands, at the Southern end of the Kruger National Park, South Africa

Ulusaba means “place of little fear”. That’s because the koppie where Rock Lodge sits provided the ancient Shangaan warriors with the perfect lookout point.

My wife and I visited Ulusaba to celebrate our Silver Wedding and thought that it would be the Holiday of a lifetime! How right we were!!

Ulusaba is an absolutely wonderful place. The Service, Facilities, Food and Wildlife are all spectacular, so good that we are saving hard for a return visit.

If you are thinking of going on Safari, this one comes thoroughly recommended.

Read on for a summary of our experience.

We flew with Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow to Johannesburg and chose to take a connecting flight with Federal Airlines between Johannesburg and Ulusaba's private airstrip.

When we landed, we were greeted by our Ranger and Tracker, our guides throughout our stay. (Whoops! I forgot to mention the cold glass of Champagne!)

We were then taken on a short drive (Around 10 minutes) to the lodges, to enjoy another drink and a spot of Breakfast before being escorted to our Room.

The Lodges at Ulusaba are either at Rock Lodge, at the top of a Koppie, with tremendous views over the surrounding countryside, or at Safari Lodge, a series of Lodges, several of which are linked together by rope bridges or elevated walkways. The Lodges are along the banks of a dry river bed, in the shade of a canopy of ancient trees.

For that authentic Safari feel and to be close to the wildlife, Safari Lodge is the preferred option. We chose to stay in a River Room at Safari Lodge. Our room was River Room 3.

Our room was very spacious, with a fabulous bed, and a fully stocked fridge! A small balcony to the rear of the room allowed us to sit outside and relax, whilst watching the wildlife wander by.

Each morning an early morning alarm call would wake us in time for us to be collected and escorted to the Main Lodge for a Coffee and Croissant before embarking on our first game drive of the day.

It was only a short walk across one Rope Bridge from our room to the main lodge, the rope bridges are a little unstable the first time you cross them, but you very quickly get used to them.

There is only one word to describe the game drives - Amazing!!

The Rangers and trackers are incredible, being able to look at the tracks and identify what went past and how long ago, then to head off in the right direction and find it. Ulusaba is a private reserve, so the drivers don't crowd the animals, they use the radios to speak to each other, ensuring that there are never more than two Land Rovers at any sighting at any time.
